Green Shakshuka
My family goes through of eggs on a weekly basis. It really is our protein of choice, especially during a pandemic when kids are running around, work is somehow happening in the background and everyone needs to eat with minimal time to prep and cook. I have said this many, many times before, I genuinely believe eggs are the perfect food, especially if you can get your hands on Conestoga eggs that are certified local by Foodland Ontario and produced by Ontario farmers.
Gluten Free Buckwheat Waffles
These gluten free buckwheat waffles are easy to make and delicious. Buckwheat is a wonderful gluten free flour to use in pancake and waffle recipes because its actually made from a seed and not a grain. Buckwheat has a unique nutty, rich flavour, that pairs well with sweet fruit and maple syrup. Buckwheat is a good source of magnesium, a mineral that helps to relax blood vessels and muscles in the body. Magnesium is one of the most important nutrients for brain health and ha

Peach Rhubarb Grain Free Paleo Muffins
Juicy peaches in the summer are something that we always look forward to since they're only available for such a short window of time. This year we decided to combine peaches with locally grown rhubarb to make these delicious, subtly sweet muffins. Scientists have found that peaches may even contain some anticancer properties, thanks to the antioxidant caffeic acid that's found in peaches. The tart rhubarb pairs perfectly with sweet peach. Raspberry Chia Jam
Most store bought jams and jellies are loaded with sugar, but it's easy to make your own homemade version that is sweetened with a little bit of maple syrup instead. Or you could even make a sugar free version by leaving out sweetener all together or use a keto friendly sweetener such as monkfruit or xylitol. We love using chia seeds as an alternative to pectin, which you'll commonly see used to create the gelatinous consistency of jam and jelly. Chia seeds are one of the
Asparagus and Mushroom Galette (grain free and gluten free)
This year, instead of making something sugary, we decided to make a savory galette for Valentine's Day. Galettes are one of those types of recipes that every time we make one we feel like we made something really special and unique (all the while, it's really easy to put one together). This recipe turns out perfectly with grain free almond flour and tapioca flour, with the perfect balance in texture, a little bit soft and then slightly crisp on the edges. Asparagus are a g
Shakshuka with Yogurt and Za'atar
Shakshuka is such a warming, comforting and filling recipe for breakfast, that also works as a cozy dinner option. Simmered tomatoes with spices is the perfect complement to gently cooked eggs, especially when you mix in some tart yogurt. We've used dairy-free coconut yogurt in this recipe, but you can use any type of yogurt that you like. In this version of shakshuka we chose to add in turnip and zucchini for an extra serving of veggies, reminiscent of a tagine. You coul
Raspberry Vanilla Cassava Muffins (grain free)
This muffin recipe is perfect for breakfast because it's just slightly sweet and packed with lots of protein and healthy fats to keep you fuelled throughout the morning. It's the perfect combination of raspberries and vanilla. Using dates to sweeten these muffins means that they won't spike your blood sugar as quickly as other sweeteners or sugar, plus dates are rich in a wide array of minerals and fiber. Cassava flour works well here and is a wonderful grain free alternat

Paleo and Grain Free Peach Cobbler
There’s nothing like soft, warm peaches that just melt in your mouth. This paleo friendly peach cobbler is absolutely delicious as a sugar-free dessert but could even be used for breakfast. The good news is that this recipe is gluten free, grain free and sweetened with only maple syrup. Peaches are a good source of vitamin C, which is an important vitamin to help your cells fight off damage from free radicals. Peaches are also high in fiber so they support digestion and keep
Superfood Gluten Free Cherry and Dark Chocolate Cookies
Calling all cookie lovers! These gluten free and vegan cookies are extremely delicious and rich in fiber, protein, and low in sugar, making them nutrient dense. We’ve sweetened these cookies with only whole food sweeteners, maple syrup and blackstrap molasses, and a little bit of dark chocolate and cacao nibs make them extra delicious. There is a quarter cup of both ground flax and hemp seeds in the recipe. Ground flax is high in omega 3 fatty acids, protein, and fiber (which
Cacao Cherry Granola Clusters
Granola doesn't last very long around Living Kitchen HQ. We love it so much that we could eat it for every meal (alright, maybe we're exaggerating a little bit). While oats are packed with heart-healthy soluble fibre that makes for a satiating breakfast, store-bought versions are often high in sugar - around 12.5 grams per cup according to The Guardian . Eating this first thing in the morning can absolutely be a recipe for a massive energy spike and crash later in the day.
Blueberry Banana Ginger Spelt Oat Muffins
Ever crave a muffin in the morning that's perfect for breakfast but not too sweet? We are always trying to find recipes for baked goods that won't give us a sugar rush or that shaky feeling that comes from eating something too sweet for breakfast. This recipe is a lovely combination of spelt, oat and buckwheat that creates a flavourful, rich flour that's also still fluffy. Buckwheat is a gluten free flour that we love to bake with, but it is very dense when used on it's own
Pumpkin Buckwheat Mini Muffins
It's fall and that means pumpkin spice season! These little muffins have all the spices from pumpkin pie and are perfect for breakfast or as a snack. Buckwheat is a gluten free grain that has an earthy taste that can be noticeable in some recipes, but pairing it with oat flour in these muffins helps to mellow out the strong flavour. Pumpkin (and squash) is a wonderful seasonal vegetable to eat in the fall and winter because it's packed with vitamins and antioxidant strength

Matcha Chia Pudding
Smooth, creamy, sweet and yet kinda like earthy green tea at the same time...matcha lends a unique taste to this chia pudding. Chia pudding is one of our favourite things to make for breakfast because it's so easy to prepare in advance (even days in advance) and then just grab it and go in the morning. With this recipe, we even prepped all the fruit in advance and stored it in the same mason jar as the chia pudding. If you like green tea, then you'll love this special match
Pomegranate Blueberry 10-Minute Pancakes (gluten free, vegan)
When you don't have a lot of time in the morning, breakfast usually comes last, and quickly. We get pretty tired of toast, smoothies and granola though. Pancakes are normally reserved for the weekend, on more leisurely days. But, with this month being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we've been thinking about simple ways that we can incorporate more self care. Self care doesn't have to be an hour long massage or a girls' night with friends (although we love those things and
Smoothie Bowl (Banana Free) & Why Make Sugar Free Smoothies?
The question of whether or not to eat sugar comes up a lot for many of our clients, especially when it comes to cancer prevention. This can be a challenge when it comes to making smoothies and clients ask us if it’s okay to put sweet fruit in them. In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this October, we are going to be sharing some blog posts with important information for women...and the question about sugar is one of the things we’ll look at. If you don’t like banana
Breakfast Cookies (grain free, gluten free, refined sugar free)
We used to be skeptical of breakfast cookies. Can a cookie really be healthy enough to serve for breakfast? Thankfully we discovered that using seed or nut butter as the main ingredient for a cookie, creates a high protein and nutrient dense cookie that is healthy enough for breakfast. Instead of using oats, which are very common in breakfast cookie and granola bar recipes, we wanted a recipe that would work for all of our clients, including the ones that can’t eat grains
Peanut Butter Chocolate Chia Pudding (peanut-free version too)
Chia pudding is one of the easiest ways to ensure that you eat a filling breakfast and have something prepped to start the day off. If you haven't had chia pudding before, it's a bit different than normal pudding but still tastes delicious (and is so much healthier). Chia seeds are high in soluble fiber and thicken liquids when mixed together because they absorb liquid and expand, becoming softer and more plump. This is good for 2 reasons: 1. Chia seeds naturally create a
Cherry Coconut Smoothie and Why You Should Eat Cherries
We're absolutely lovin' cherry season this year, especially since it's for such a short time, it feels extra special. Cherries are one of the best fruits to pack for snacks during the work day, on road trips, on camping trips, and even on plane rides, because they are strong enough to stand the heat and are less likely to get crushed than softer berries and nectarines or peaches. The rich and bright colour of cherries is caused by a type of flavanoids called anthocyanins. An
Turmeric Latte & 5 Nutrition Tips for Breast Cancer Prevention
As October is breast cancer awareness month, it’s an important time to think about this disease that affects so many people in our country and around the world. I have recently experienced the loss of a dear family friend from breast cancer, and many of you will have also, as it is the most common cause of cancer death in women. Breast cancer is strongly affected by dietary, lifestyle and environmental factors, and therefore taking preventative measures may help reduce the ri
Spelt Pancakes
When I was kid, I was in love with Eggo waffles and pancakes. In love – like, we had a full on love affair. I can remember galloping downstairs to our electric turquoise 90’s kitchen before school started, popping the Eggos in the toaster, coating them in honey and digging in. It’s no wonder years later I would develop severe digestive issues… hmmm… I am not always a lover of sweet breakfasts, but every now and again a pancake will meet my eye and I will think…mmmm that l
